You can learn more about him on LinkedIn at http://www.linkedin.com/in/neetibodh (fairly descriptive)

Proposed Agenda:

1. Challenges to Entrepreneurs in their pursuit of Building Technology Products.

2. Similarities and differences in Building Consumer & Enterprise Products.

Note: Thankfully the above will be discussed using real life cases as the foundation (without getting into specific company names & details).
Key Points:

1. The above topics are more from an entrepreneurs and founding teams perspective and less from a pure technologist perspective.

2. If you are essentially a non techie but leading or a part of technology driven startup then don't miss the meet. Neeti will share insights on what should be your approach in product development; managing internal / partner / external teams. Also, how to avoid most common mistakes.

3. The above topics are so vast and there is so much to learn from Neeti so suggest the following:

a. Please be on time so that we start at sharp 10:30 AM.

b. It is a theme meet, wide topic, so if you are late, I am afraid - we can't be repeating the already discussed content.

c. Yes the idea is to have a very interactive session but please be brief, to the point and don't hijack the thread or go off-tangent. Take such discussions off-line. Neeti will be available post the talk as well.

d. To save on time, club / bundle similar or closely tied questions so that they get addressed in one go.

Meet Summary ( Co-Founders) ; 27th April 2008

Open Coffee Club Bangalore meets up every alternate Sunday to discuss about Entrepreneurship. The group focuses on working at the grass root level by giving a platform to Entrepreneurs, Wannabe Entrepreneurs and Venture Capitalists connect with each other. The theme of the meet today was Co-Founders, a topic often discussed and thought about individuals planning to venture out.

Close to 25 people turned up at 11 AM today, to discuss about Co-founders and also share their experiences on this subject while working on their idea/ venture. The group aimed to discuss about the various parameters which one should look in a Co-Founder and how co-founders can actually make or break the success of the Startup.

Prateek Dayal who is also the co-founder of Muziboo, a music sharing website, described his experience while working on his previous venture. The core points which Prateek focussed on as part of the characteristics of co-founders were around the seriousness of taking the startup to the next level; making your startup big. Prateek also discussed about the benefits of starting out alone and eventually looking for a co-founder.

Rakesh who also happens to be the Co-Founder of Crederity Inc. also shared his thoughts on Commitment and expectations within the co-founders. Harsha, another regular at OCC and the co-founder of Adventure described his process of starting up right after the college. Harsha says " When co-founding, Dont let the ego come in between and respect the co-founder as an individual human being" . He believes a co-founder should have the courage and the aura to take the task to the finish line.

Rahul whose company works in the Mobile space, went ahead to add to the discussion. He said " Commitment, Accountability, Focus and Openness towards feedback are the parameters one should look in a co-founder". He also added and i quote " Arguments within the co-founders in a startup is not a bad sign. Its a healthy sign and helps remove the blockages. Such startups tend to fight out to success". His thoughts were well appreciated by the group.

Amongst the others who also shared their views on this topic were Vimali Swamy, from SiliconIndia.

The takeaway of this meet was pretty straight " Perfect Harmony between the co-founders might not happen, but success has to happen. Ensure that conflict is handled in a way that it leads to success in the end."

The next Open Coffee Club Bangalore meet shall happen on 10th May 2008, Sunday. Stay tuned to the group and Open Coffee Club Blog ( http://bangaloreocc.blogspot.com) for further details.

Meetup Sumaary: 16th March 2008

It was definitely a good meetup yesterday,16th March 2008 Sunday. A group of close to 50+ people turned up for the Open Coffee Club meet at CoreObjects. As known the agenda for this meet was centered around OpenCommune and NEN Startup Jobs.

Venkat Ramana, C.E.O of Outsmart360 started with his talk on OpenCommune and the idea/inspiration behind it. He went on to discuss the existing gaps in the present office space ecosystem. Venkat has been working on the idea of OpenCommune since sometime now and it was great to hear him replying back to some interesting questions passed on by the fellow members. Below are some of the questions raised by the group:

  • The fees for this entire service? As per Venkat, Outsmart has some 8 desks to rent out and he plans to keep the fees for that at a bare minimum of 1500rs per desk.
  • How come the fees is so damn low? This is not a commercial offering, its an offering aimed at growing the community.
  • What happens if the startup company gets a big project and/or needs to hire more people for its requirements? The OpenCommune desk space will be based on a charter which shall be able to take care of this scenario.

In brief the idea of OpenCommune is still new in India and is gaining traction with this initiative of Venkat which he plans to keep on the lines of OpenSource.

Also, Shalin Mantri from NEN Startup Jobs was present at the meet to talk about this new initiative being taken up by NEN. NEN Startup Jobs is still nascent and the purview of its activities is still not finalized in full and therefore i wont talk much about it here. I believe when its all set to launch, Shalin being a member of the group list, shall announce it himself :)

All in all, it was exciting and awe inspiring to have a good turnout of people for the meet. Hoping to catch up with more of you on 30th March, Sunday. Stay tuned for further info's with regards to the same.

Also, if you are blogging about yesterday's event; do share the link here.

About Us..

OCC is just the forum you were looking for, if you want to know the A-Z of entrepreneurship, more so , if you wish to hear it from people who made it.

The key is that when we say “Open”, we mean it to the core.
And precisely that is why we have kept it so simple, if you have an idea, Push it forth, and we will take care of the rest.

At OCC like minded people come, and share their vision and everyone has a Take away, at the end of the day. Effectively, there is so much that can be learnt from the first hand experiences of people who have succeeded, but more so from people who are struggling, what the pain points are, what is the kind of revenue model that can be aimed at in this ever booming economy, and an endless other areas, you bring it forth, we will discuss about it.

Like an Idea-Jam, we practice the Six Thinking Hats, More so, in an informal way (Don’t be carried away, by my High end Methodology!)
Why the Six Hats, because, each one of us, tends to add on r contribute from a different Perspective all together, which means, while we practice this brainstorming, we actually simulate a board room milieu , where even if your idea guns down, you tend to admire it, because, the sooner you take the Risks into account, the better, it is.

Effectively, we believe in the famous Computer Networks principle, KISS, “Keep It Simple Stupid”

February 3rd, Core Objects..

This weeks OCC meet was at Core Objects, Basavnagudi.

We bunch of Unconventi’es started out by trying to chalk out a theme, and just then we identified we had a lawyer on board.
So, Sharda Balaji ,Cofounder and director NovoJuris, touched upon a few ‘legal’ aspects that need to be taken care of.
To begin with, there are some legal key issues that “start ups” often tend to ignore. These are:

Why shell out the money right away when things can wait?

The start ups are always unwilling to shell out money, for the simple reason being they want to keep the costs low. It is very difficult to hire a good lawyer or legal consultant, and the entrepreneurs often have reservations about every penny, they think can be saved. So they try to do all the running around themselves. Right from getting the venture registered, to getting the Pan card ,the current account .While if they were to seek some professional legal advice, they could devote more energy towards working on the Idea, rather than setting up everything in place.(The work-Environment)
What entrepreneurs fail to realise is that time lost is not money lost alone, but is like losing the ‘Zen’ or the energy.

Trapped!

When entrepreneurs seek out angel funding or venture capital, or partnerships, they are more focused towards hitting the deal, so they often end up overlooking the catches, which a law firm professional would analyse from strategic perspectives.
The truth is that a Start up needs a legal advice or consulting right from the day when the registration is done, to its entire process of emanating.
Hence one should avoid doing all the juggling by one self and should definitely not overlook this aspect, so as to avoid future liabilities and setbacks.

Having said that we moved to the “Clinical Session”. This session is ideally for anyone who is “In” for an idea and is thinking to hit the road very soon, or has already hit it.

We discuss the painpoints , say from challenges in Marketing and advertising , to risk Management, to Customer discoverability, and surprisingly the loopholes in the Idea Itself!
For eg, we had a Idea on “Retail Management”, and this followed a good amount of brainstorming.

If you have an Idea, you have to groom it. Putting on different Hats, because you were the one who thought about it in the first place, so most probably , your Business Model will be overly Optimistic. But that‘s now how things work in a real domain. You will always have competition, and because they have hit the market before you, they will always have an advantage, unless you have identified that there are some gaps or solutions that your Idea can fill, which is what prompts the customer to come to you.

We had Sameerkanth, from NEN, who talked about different aspects of entrepreneurship, and how NEN is different from TIE and Pan India.
We then talked about the challenges and what is the vision of NEN. Noteworthy here is the fact that NEN is a Not for Profit Organisation, which is managed by the Wadwa Foundation.

We also had a reporter from Mint with us, Namitha, who writes on Venture capitalists, and she brought out some important points, as to why Start ups are not covered so well in and why Venture capitalists get an upper hand.
What everyone admired was the fact that she said “I would love to cover a story of a start up fighting against all odds, rather than a story which all journalists pen down in tomorrow’s newspaper.’
Now that was it, leave alone the fact that she was young (Read, Unconventional), but what was interesting here is, that we have never commercialized OCC, as the name says, “Open”, is the key.
So, interesting here is that, in spite of not having Branded OCC to this extent, she was there, not to report the event, but to know, what actually goes behind ‘Making It’,
Now this speaks volume about OCC and its image in general.

Towards the end we wrapped up the day with, a pledge, to support and promote Entrepreneurship.

All in all, just the place to look out for every Alternate Sundays.

See you there!
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish!
